Tens of thousands of students will lose over a quarter billion dollars in college aid because of a rules change that Republicans snuck into today's omnibus spending bill.
In 2003, the Bush Administration made revisions to financial aid eligibility that would have eliminated Pell Grants for 84,000 students, and reduced college aid to thousands more students.
A Democratic amendment to the 2004 Education Appropriations bill reversed the Bush cuts, restoring Pell Grants and college aid to students.
Unfortunately, President and Congressional Republicans seem determined to force students to pay more for college, because they've snuck in this same Bush rule change into this year's spending bill.
At a time when college tuition costs continue to rise and student loan debt soars, it's shocking that President Bush and the Republicans will eliminate Pell Grants to some 84,000 students and cut college loans to thousand more students.
