Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has moved to make sure that same-sex couples from out of state will not be eligible to marry in the US state next month, based on a 1913 statute originally designed to avoid issuing licences to interracial couples.
Romney is backing up his interpretation of the law by initiating new forms and new requirements for town clerks. Once same-sex marriages become legal on May 17, town clerks will be obliged to ask for proof of residency, and some press reports suggest that clerks who ignore Romney's policy may be violating the law themselves.
