So why the fuck have the Democrats decided to let the Gonzales nomination slide on through? Oh sure, they'll ask a few uncomfortable questions for show, but it'll be about as tough as the choreographed gang fights in "West Side Story."

You spineless whores. Imagine, "hard questions." Anything approaching, say, being made to stand hooded and motionless while electric wires are connected to your genitalia?

Rear Adm. John D. Hutson, who served as the Navy's judge advocate general from 1997 to 2000 before he retired, has said that while Mr. Gonzales may have an inspiring personal story he was at the forefront of an effort to subject detainees to coercive practices that was on the wrong side of history and betrayed longstanding American principles.

Admiral Hutson is one of several military legal experts, all former generals or admirals, who will release a letter on Monday asserting that Mr. Gonzales's legal judgments might disqualify him for the post of attorney general.

The letter to the Judiciary Committee said Mr. Gonzales's actions "fostered greater animosity toward the United States, undermined our intelligence gathering efforts, and added to the risks facing our troops serving around the world."

Senator Charles E. Schumer, a New York Democrat on the committee, said in an interview that despite reservations about Mr. Gonzales, he is likely to be confirmed and with broad Democratic support.

Schumer's excuse is that the threshold for cabinet confirmations is much lower than for the Supreme Court.

Jeeze. You know, Chuck, this guy will be in charge of arresting people. I don't know about you, but the rest of us actually give a shit about our civil liberties. It's not such a very big jump from torturing prisoners to arresting dissenters in the middle of the night.

When the hell are Democrats going to wake up and realize what's at stake here?
